Summary:	Saint John of Damascus has a pupil whom he has instructed to write in a way similar to his own script. The pupil, envious of his master’s favor with the emperor, writes in the manner of the saint a letter betraying the emperor’s military plans to his enemies. The saint is accused and his hand cut off. The Virgin, to whom the saint was devoted, appears to him and restores his hand. (267)
