Snow 2007: "On pp. 111-14 ("El gallego") N. offers this suggestion for Alfonso's choice of Galician-Provenzal for composing poetic texts: of the four contemporary idioms (the others being Provenzal, Latin, and Castilian), Alfonso preferred the national idiom (e.g., Iberian) with the strongest poetic tradition and in which the troubadours of his own court versified (Alfonso's admiration for their art is amply documented in the Declaratio). He rightly rejects Entwisle's explanation based on emotional sympathy for the language." |
