Notes from Snow 1977: "Tries to show - on the basis of 27 unfavourable presentations of the Muslim in a total of 42 cantigas where he is present - that Alfonso X is guilty of personal intolerance. This view is ingenuous and must be treated with some skepticism. B. notes that eight of the CSM treat the Muslim as virtuous, but he does not consider which of these conflicting representations indicate Alfonso's real feelings, which of the poems were written by Alfonso himself, or whether any of the literary roles created correspond to the poet's attitude rather than to a wish to create varied situations. The article is based on B.'s dissertation (1968)." |
