Snow 1977, no. 51: "A popularizing art. of no profundity. B. paints a black portrait of King Alonso and a much brighter one of Alonso el Sabio. The comments on the CSM are limited but fairly accurate (pp. 522-5). Follows Valera (1873) in preferring the narrative parables to the lyric loores. There is a partial translation of cantiga 79 - the tale of Musa and a few other CSM are mentioned. Attributes the rhymed Tesoro to Alfonso and gives a sample of it through Longfellow's English trans." |
