Snow 1977, no. 173: "Brief discussion of the CSM highlighted by rejection of Ribera's theory of Arabic origin of the melodies of Alfonso's songs. Reese takes the opposite view, i.e. that Christian usage (the virelai and related strophic forms) may have influenced the zéjel. Anglés's early transcriptions of the music merit high praise from Reese; there is less enthusiasm for Aubry (1906, 1908) and his follower, Trend (1926). A brief bibliography appears on pp. 450-1." |
