Commentary: Snow 1977, no. 242: "S.'s information concerning the varied background of the monodic music of the CSM derives unchanged from Valmar (1889) and Anglés (1943) and his attempt to use less technical terminology leads to oversimplification of the issues. The best points are those in which he describes the use of mixed musical modes and in which he compares the instruments depicted in Escurial MS J.b.2 with those mentioned in the Libro de buen amor (Ducamin's ed., st. 1227-34 and 1513-17) and in the Libro de Alexandre (st. 1383, Willis ed.). Plates V-VIII complement the text with some nice illustrations of musical instruments and players."
