"D. doubts a direct relationship between the stanzaically similar zéjel and the rondeau (and virelai). He supports the proposition that Alfonso borrowed the form from the Arabic South: it was an accustomed form which had been nourished for a long time in the Peninsula. In his discussion of the medieval use of the flos florum conceit, he brings in CSM 10 (p. 186). The entire book is worth concentrated reading, even if Alfonso's part in it is small." |
