Snow 1977: "P. uses previous scholarship wisely, especially Pellegrini (1961), whom he follows closely. In reviewing the criticisms Alfonso made of Pero da Ponte in CV 68 and 70, P. shows that such displays were part of contemporary poetic play and, like Baena's insults to his friend and teacher Villansandino, not to be taken too literally. Earlier critics interpreted these poems without understanding the spirit of fun which was an integral part of this poetic genre." |
