Snow 1977: "The closest scrutiny to date of Alfonso's unusual practices of enjambement, this study concludes that Alfonso is closer to Latin theories of composition than to either Provençal or Galician-Portuguese practice in his disruptive (often even violently so) displays of run-on lines. In the narrative miragres enjambement speeds the pace of the story. Where there is no story line, as in the loores, enjambement is less striking. This implies that here Alfonso is less faithful to theory and more experimental in his own right: yet another way in which the loores show marked invention in contrast to the miragres." |
