Snow 1977rn"This is a sample of a longer study the author says she is preparing. It focusses on the large miniatures at the beginning (usually) of a MS in which is depicted a scene of the king-as-patron receiving a finished copy of the work he had commissioned. Alfonsine MSS were truly the first to include such scenes as a regular feature. The CSM illumination has a secular artistic style and is obviously very carefully supervised by Alfonso as well as highly valued. The presentation scenes from the two Escurial MSS are reproduced and the larger of the two from MS T.j.1 appears on the cover, in colour. The commentary concentrates on traits of style common to these scenes in several Alfonsine texts." |
