Snow 2007: "Ch. XIII ("The Spanish and Galician-Portuguese Cantigas") affirms that monophonic Iberian song is a result of the troubadour activity in France and that a literary and musical precedent is Gautier de Coincy's Miracles de Nostre Dame. The virelai form, while simple and essentially syllabic, finds great melodic expressivity in Alfonso's CSM. H. believes that the CSM can be transcribed in modern notation with assurance. Accompanying the brief notes are three black and white illustrations. Informative, more for general readers than for scholars." |
