Notes from Snow 1977, no. 296: "P. edits CB (MS) 467 and 468. The first is also CSM 40; the second seems to be the first stanza of another unknown Alfonsine loor. Both indicate that Alfonso probably composed religious verse earlier than had been supposed by most critics, both being out of place here among his secular, and sometimes quite profane, poetry. P. feels his edition of CB 467/CSM 40 offers readings preferable to those of either Valmar (1889) or Mettmann (1959). For CB 468, he clears up some readings of the Machado ed. (1949) which made parts of this surviving 8 line strophe unintelligible." |
