Notes from Snow 1977, no. 9: "Actually written in 1741 and published posthumously, S.laments the meager study of Alfonso as poet, having only minor praise for Ortiz de Zúñiga (above, 1677). He corrects his contemporaries in stating that the language of the CSM is Galician (Rubecamp, 1933, gives detailed evidence for this view). He has seen the Toledo MS and cites briefly from Prol. A. The remaining few strophes cited are copied from Papebrochio's defective rendering (1684). The then common attribution of the Alexandre to Alfonso is rejected, but the poetic Tesoro (which is commented at length) and the Querellas still remain among Alfonso's attributed works." |
