Snow 2007: "A descriptive article accentuating the perfect mensural notation achieved in the CSM (a claim not all musicologists would agree with). The notes used (longa, brevis, semibreve, etc.) are illustrated — with and without modifications such as the plica. Modal rhythms are often binary, as in CSM 111, ternary as in CSM 40, or a combination of the two, as in CSM 125. The melodies are generally of three types: 1) Gregorian; 2) popular or traditional; or 3) newly composed. The topics are treated rather superficially." |
