A learned archdeacon joined the Dominican Order. St Dominic was pleased and went out with the man to preach. As they were preaching, the archdeacon suffered a severe pain. The doctors said his case was hopeless and that he was sure to die. As the archdeacon lay there, Dominic prayed to the Virgin to cure him. The Virgin appeared to the archdeacon and comforted him. Many other virgins also came; they recited prayers from their books and anointed the archdeacon’s head, body and feet.St Dominic, lying nearby in another room, saw the Virgin appear and the archdeacon being anointed. He was overjoyed and gave thanks to the Virgin. After he had been completely anointed, Mary ascended into heaven with the virgins, and the archdeacon was completely cured. |
