Sixteen men from Lisbon went on a raid in the Algarve. They found a fat deer in the woods and killed it. Then they roasted it and sat down to eat. Eight of the men declined to eat the meat because it was Saturday, and they were fasting in the Virgin’s honour. These men only ate bread. The rest of the men ate their fill of the deer. They rode off and encountered some Moors. The Moors struck the Christians with lances, and the ones who had eaten the deer were badly injured. Great chunks of meat came out of the wounds in their sides. The men who had fasted, however, received no wounds and pursued and defeated the Moors. Seeing this, the meat-eaters vowed to fast on Saturdays from that time forth. |
