Summary of narrative | |||
Setting: | the village of Arconada, near Palencia | Protagonist(s): | the people of Arconada |
A great crowd of people assembled in Arconada to celebrate the Virgin’s feast in August. They heard the canonical hours, took communion, and then simply enjoyed themselves. Wrestlers wrestled and storytellers recited racy tales. Cows were butchered, cooked in great cauldrons, and fed to the poor. Naturally, everyone was so merry that the stocks of wine began to diminish. The people, who had drunk an entire cask of wine, were preparing to leave, since none was left. Then a man suggested that they reexamine the cask to see if a little wine might be left in the bottom. They did this, and found the cask completely full. Their weeping turned to laughing and they drank that wine. It was unparallelled and even cured the sick. |
