Summary of narrative | |||
Setting: | Rome | Protagonist(s): | a woman, Roman emperor |
A woman, whose husband had died, slept with her son. She became pregnant by him. After giving birth to a son, she killed him at home in secret. The devil, in the guise of a diviner, revealed the woman’s crime to the Roman emperor. The emperor summoned the woman and also called the diviner. To her astonishment, he described her deeds. The emperor gave him three days to prove the truth of his accusation. The woman prayed to the Virgin to exonerate her. When the woman was called before the emperor, her accuser had nothing to say and fled, in the form of a devil, tearing a large hole in the roof. |
