Setting: unspecified Protagonist(s): Pedro Lourenço, a painter in the service of the King [Alfonso X]

A man trusted in the Virgin and painted her books very well. He was so skilled that he surpassed all others in painting.

Once he painted a very beautiful image of the Virgin, and the King promised to reward him with an estate or some other thing.

The painter asked him if he could have a half share in a scribe’s post in Villa-Real.

The King granted his request, but a man in the chancery, a clerk in charge of the seals, held up the paperwork for about fifteen days. When the King heard about this, he threatened to punish the clerk and ordered the contract to be drafted without further delay.

Nevertheless, the clerk would not do it, because he was a friend of the man who held the other half of the post [in Villa-Real]. The chancery officials procrastinated, despite the King’s demands.

Pedro Lourenço prayed to Santa Maria do Porto. He promised to give her 200 maravedís if he won the contract. As soon as he had made this promise, the King punished the notary, and Pedro Lourenço received his contract and went on his way.
