Setting: unspecified Protagonist(s): an ignorant priest

A priest only knew how to say the mass of the Virgin; he could say no other “well or badly.”

This was reported to the bishop who summoned him.

The bishop asked him if this was true and the priest admitted it.

The bishop commanded the priest to leave the city and go into exile.

That night, the Virgin appeared to the bishop and commanded him to reinstate the priest. She told him that if he did not do so he would die within thirty days and go to hell.

The bishop got up early, gave the priest a double ration, and told him that it was fitting for him to continue to say the mass of the Virgin.
