Summary of narrative | ||||
Setting: | Cologne | Protagonist(s): | a monk of St Peter’s, Cologne | |
In the monastery of St Peter near Cologne there was a monk who had a liking for worldly pleasures. One day he fell ill, drank some medicine, and died unconfessed. The devil came to seize his soul, but was thwarted by St Peter, who begged God to save it. God refused because the soul was tainted. St Peter mustered all the other saints to ask God to save the monk’s soul, but God refused their petition. Then St Peter asked the Virgin to intercede with Christ on the monk’s behalf. Christ granted her petition and pardoned the monk. When the monk’s soul was restored, he rose to his feet and told the other monks what had happened. |
