Summary of narrative | |||
Setting: | La Arrijaca, Murcia | Protagonist(s): | Alfonso X and the Moors of Murcia; King don Jaime of Aragón; mention of Genoese, Pisans and Sicilians |
In the district of the Arrijaca, in Murcia, there was an ancient church dedicated to the Virgin. Men from Genoa, Pisa and Sicily went there to pray and make offerings. The Moors were unable to harm the church, although it lay in their district. They requested that Alfonso X remove the church, and he granted their plea. But it was to no avail. Then they asked King don Jaime of Aragón to allow the church to be destroyed. Although he also consented, they were unable to do it. Later on, they put the request to Alfonso X once again. He was reluctant to see the church destroyed because it had just been freshly painted, but he granted the request. When the Moors asked their King if he would do the deed he refused, claiming that Mary deals harshly with those who displease her. |
