Setting: unspecified Protagonist(s): Theophilus

The narrator explains that Adam, who sinned by tasting the apple, was saved by the intercession of the Virgin. She asked her Son to rescue Adam from hell.

A man named Theophilus made a pact with the devil in order to gain power.

The devil made Theophilus sign a charter, deny the Virgin, and declare that he did not believe in God.

After Theophilus had made the pact, he served the devil for a while. Then he repented, weeping in front of a statue of the Virgin and begging her pardon.

The Virgin made the devil fetch the charter.

The Virgin returned the charter to Theophilus.
